Forest, gravel and landscape

On the road in the Gäu between Boningen and Oensingen.

The Gäu forest hike leads through three different landscapes:

> the wide gravel plains between Boningen and Oensingen with the ever-present issue of gravel

> the moraine hills south of the Dünner plain

> The terraced terrain near Wolfwil, shaped by the former and present course of the Aare.

The fascination of the Solothurn forest walks lies in the diversity of forest plant communities that can be found along the way. The respective microclimate, the slope, the altitude, the soil characteristics, but also the shaping interventions by human hands characterize the landscape on a small and large scale. As a result, the surroundings and thus the impressions often change suddenly and surprisingly as you walk.

Around 40% of the canton of Solothurn is forested! The fascination of the "Solothurn Forest Walks" lies in the diversity of the forest landscapes. Microclimate, geology and soil, as well as human intervention, shape the forest landscape.

This means that impressions often change suddenly and surprisingly when hiking.

Further information can be downloaded as a PDF. This contains the map section with the route marked, directions and useful hiking tips.

We hope you enjoy hiking in the forest!
